Women face various challenges in every era. During the Dutch colonial period in Indonesia, women were often subjected to exploitation. The condition of women during that time is reflected in numerous novels through the representation of female characters depicted as weak, living lives filled with injustice, and lacking happiness. This representation of oppressed women is deconstructed through the character of Marian Bintang Nauli Hasibuan in the novel Ragam Ni Si Marian. Based on that, this study aims to uncover the representation and meaning of women during the Dutch colonial period as portrayed in Ragam Ni Si Marian. The study employs a multimodal approach to analyze the representation and meaning of women in the novel, using the Reading Images theory developed by Kress & van Leeuwen and text analysis based on Paul Gee’s Seven Building Tasks framework. The findings reveal that the combination of text, images, and colors in Ragam Ni Si Marian offers a unique representation and meaning of women during the Dutch colonial period in Indonesia.
