Abstract

This study aims to analyse the formation of the negative stigma of ‘kampung penadah’ towards Sukolilo Village, Pati, Central Java, through comments on CNN Indonesia YouTube videos. A content analysis approach was used to categorise the comments into negative, neutral and defence. Most of the comments supported the negative stigma, reinforcing the stereotype of criminality against the village. This research draws on cultivation theory, which explains how media influence public perception through consistent narratives. Social media algorithms magnify the visibility of emotional comments, further reinforcing stigma. As a result, Sukolilo residents experience discrimination and social exclusion, which is economically and socially detrimental. The results of this study highlight the role of digital media in shaping public opinion and its impact on specific local areas or communities.
