The Use Of Clause Complexes In Ijal Research Article Abstracts

The aim of this study is to find out the clause complexes application in two article abstracts taken from The Indonesian Journal of Applied Linguistics (IJAL) 2019. This study was a descriptive qualitative study under Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) analysis. The object of this study is two articles abstracts. They were analyzed by using SFL framework theory proposed by Halliday (2004) and Gerrot & Wignell (1995). In this study, the writer focused on parts of clause complexes. They are system of interdependency and logico-semantic relation. Taxis covers parataxis and hypotaxis. Meanwhile, logico semantic covers expansion (elaboration, extension, and enhancement) and projection (idea and locution). The findings revealed both articles abstracts, there are six clause complexes, where four clauses are parataxis and two clauses are hypotaxis. Additionally, there are nine logico semantic relations, they are an elaboration, two extension, and five enhancement clauses. However, there was no projection existence in the research articles abstracts.
