Futuristic Dystopia Themed Social Issues in Film (Film Analysis “A World Without”)

Abstract

In addition to being entertainment, the purpose of the movie is giving messages to the audience, many movies are representative of social issues in society. On October 14, 2021, Netflix Original released an Indonesian film by director Nia Dinata entitled "A World Without". A World Without tells the story of three teenage girls who join an organization called The Light, an organization that offers dreams and a bright future, "but in reality the organization is not beautiful as they imagined". This film takes the background in 2030, ten years after the Covid-19 pandemic and sees Indonesia's economic condition which is not doing well. This study uses a descriptive approach and content analysis. There are many elements that can be analyzed from this film, because this film will also deal with social criticism that has been taboo in society, such as young marriage, which the writer analyzes using Benocratic theory, instilling trust, and empowering women which is analyzed using Karl's theory. Broadly speaking, the findings in this study are to understand social issues that have been considered taboo and less talked about in society by looking at representations through the film A World Without.
